The research focused on the digital transformation of Slovenia in the wider context of the EU and the selected economic indicators that define the environment in which digitization takes place. We have confirmed that assessment of individual EU members, as indicated by the DESI index, can be noticeably changed if we consider the economic environment. We compared Slovenia, Finland, Estonia and the Czech Republic in detail. This part of the analysis revealed that the situation in different areas varies significantly between countries, meaning that the perception of digitization must be multi-dimensional. Slovenia has certain advantages, like high investments of companies in research and development, resulting in a high score on the Innovation index. However, it also has a number of weak points. Slovenia lags behind in the digitization of public administration and the use of Internet. However, there are also many other socially and politically coloured reasons which can significantly affect the digital transformation of the country. We can notice this phenomenon in more digitally advanced countries, such as Estonia.
