Abstract

The digital transformation of enterprises involves among others the development of new business processes and models offered by digital technologies. The purpose of digital transformation is to link different processes and conduct them in an automated manner, from the receipt of order, purchase of materials, production and delivery of the final product. The Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia (SURS) has been confronted with the challenge of how to measure the digital transformation of Slovene enterprises. With the annual statistical survey on ICT usage in enterprises with at least 10 employees, we monitor numerous indicators which indicate the spread of ICT usage in enterprises: the share of persons employed that use computers in their work, the extent of web sales, online marketing etc. The purpose of the paper is to demonstrate how existing indicators, which are used to monitor the usage of ICT, can be used to show the rate of digitalization of enterprises with at least 10 employees in Slovenia. The rate of digitalization of enterprises is presented by the digital intensity index which consists of 12 indicators used to monitor the usage of ICT in enterprises in an individual year. In 2016, most enterprises with at least 10 employees (44%) had a low digital intensity index. This shows how intensively enterprises use ICT. 38% of enterprises had a very low digital intensity index while 17% of enterprises had a high digital intensity index and 1% a very high digital intensity index.
