The functioning of the public administration in the Republic of Slovenia cannot even be imagined without informatics and informatization. However, authors currently agree that the functioning of informatics in the public administration in the Republic of Slovenia today is not analyzed sufficiently as we do not even possess a comprehensive national informatics strategy nor is it effective enough as informatics in the public administration is managed poorly. There is no snapshot of current processes, key information systems are old and the impacts of individual projects have been lower than expected.
With the development of modern information-communication technologies, public administration today has the opportunity for the creation, storage and acquisition, transfer and application of knowledge. Information-communication technology provides accessible knowledge to many users at any given time and in various multimedia formats. Knowledge in public administration today can be a competitive advantage, but information-communication technology alone cannot provide an automatic flow of knowledge between employees, which means that the role of knowledge management in public administration is important.
This paper highlights some of the public administration’s weaknesses and emphasizes the benefits of interconnecting different individual areas such as management and informatics, which would contribute to the successful realization of the common goal of public administration: a fast, efficient, and friendly service for citizens and legal entities.
